Hot springs

If you're seeking some serious relaxation, head to San Miguel de Allende's hot springs. Natural alkaline springs include: El Chorro, Montecillo, El Cortijo, Cieneguita, Atotonilco and Taboada. One hot spring, Xoté, features wonderfully therapeutic sulphurous waters.

All of these hot springs bring important health benefits with their warm to very hot waters (up to 39°C), and they are all quite popular with Mexican and foreign tourists alike. The springs owe their existance to the river Río de la Laja.

Río de la Laja crosses San Miguel de Allende from north to south, fed by many smaller streams including La Leona, Cachinches and La Petaca coming in from the east, and the rivers Talayotes, San Augustín and Los Ricos from the west. The vicinity around the river is literally bubbling with alkaline and sulfurous thermal waters, and locals have taken advantage of this natural bounty to build the numerous bathing facilities mentioned above. The Ignacio Allende reservoir, called "La Presa," controls the flow of the river.
